The Search for a Fair Society: Why the Earth 1/ Earth 2 Approach Keeps us from Finding any Solutions

September 17. Happy birthday to my beloved nephew. Grab a coffee and let’s talk a realistic utopia of a fair society.

I went into Rawls’ explanation as to what makes a liberty basic and showed how his ideas are actually rooted in the fact that everyone self-generates their individual model of the world and forming a society means to align these diverse models to a degree that cooperation becomes possible.

That’s what all the people today talking about Earth 1 and Earth 2 get wrong. They start from the assumption that the natural state is that everyone experiences the same reality created by – well, I guess some outside source. That’s the Judeo-Christian influence on the Western world (equally true for Islam though as well) and the story – the dataset – unconsciously used by all that the world has been created by God and he just created one and that’s the one world everyone lives in. We need to seriously press reset on this because the truth is that there exist as many realities on this planet as there exist conscious people (minus babies and toddlers still mastering the art of their own world generation). It is upon us to align the individual models of the world to some degree in order to be able to cooperate. This work needs to happen constantly. The dataset all people are supposed to use in their individual world generation process in their minds needs to be constantly updated and repeated because we - the people – continuously generate updated models of the world on the basis of new perceptions, new experiences and new energy/information that we pick up along the way. That’s why religious institutions demand constant attendance of services and constant reading of scripture while they prohibit a lot of possible experiences where more diverse information could be picked up. They want to dominate their members’ world generation process with their particular dataset. The same goes on in authoritarian regimes that all try to cut off any outside information sources and take over schools first, banning books and demanding that only a certain subset of information is taught, but that repetitively and rigorously in any possible way so that the children who grow up to become adults in such a system never even realize that they are the masters of their own world generation process. In a democracy, the dataset all members agree to use – agree not just tolerate – in their individual world generation process must be adjusted and repeated constantly as well. But that must happen in conversations and debates between the members in which each and every member’s voice and input must have the same power to shape the continuously evolving shared dataset as everyone else. Members of a democratic society must themselves remain always convincible that their model of the world is not the only existing truth but their choice and be ready to change it for good reasons. But they can also expect to be convinced and not forced to accept something. Currently, we lack in both as well as in the general willingness (and often also time and opportunity as there is an expectation build into the dataset forced on everyone that the mass needs to exploit existing knowledge for the benefit of a few) to put in the work it takes.

I meant to talk about the philosophical divide on the importance of certain freedom and why neither Rousseau’s school of thought nor Locke’s will ever lead to a truly fair society. But I guess this has to wait until tomorrow given how long this post is already.

Do you agree with me on my analysis of what the problem of our society today is? Tell me.
