The Search for a Fair Society: Vote!
November 5. What a pleasure to welcome you here. Grab a coffee and let’s talk about a realistic utopia of a fair society as a fair society is the only chance we have to banish violence and war from our lives.
This will be a very short talk because my whole message today is: vote. If you are eligible in the US election, vote.
I spare you the story how, at 13, I joined the protest in East Berlin not knowing whether the then USSR – today’s Russia mainly – would send tanks to stop us as she had done to every uprising before. How it felt to stand with nothing but a candle in my hands and driven by a desire for freedom and democracy, facing armed police. How the possibilities felt unlimited when the Berlin Wall fell, and we shed the replacement dataset that the regime had forced on us.
What we have now is not a fair society, a free and equal cooperation. Money can buy influence. The random happenstances of birth still decide too much when it comes to the outcome of lives. The definition of property as something that can be sucked dry and destroyed is leading us to the edge of destruction of ourselves and the planet we depend on. But the vote is still more agency to change things and get us eventually to our goal of a fair cooperation than generations before us had and most people today have. It’s worth fighting for by using it so that the work can continue.
Vote.
